ALLEGAN _ Children getting ready for the new school year may get free basic haircuts during a special event August 20 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
Licensed stylists from area salons will gather in the church at 101 North Walnut Street from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 20 for the second annual Haircuts & Hot Dogs.
“Every child deserves to head back to school feeling good about themselves,” parish member and event organizer Lynne Winters said. “Getting a haircut helps each child feel special and ready to take on the challenges of the new school year.”
But the costs of buying back-to-school supplies quickly add up, Winters said. “So we’ve organized this event to help families out a bit.”
While Winters and other licensed stylists from area salons will cut hair in one area of the church, other parish members will serve hot dogs and other refreshments in the fellowship hall.

Good Shepherd, tucked where Walnut and Hubbard streets intersect downtown, was established as a parish on June 15, 1858 and held its first worship service in its original building the next year.
The parish is part of the “Believe Out Loud” network that empowers Christians to work for LGBT equality and certifies that a church provides a welcoming atmosphere, and the congregation operates several outreach programs, including the Community Closet to distribute gently used clothing and the Baby Closet to distribute layettes for newborn babies.
