Are you ready for Lent?Lent is the 40 day preceding Easter. But, strangely, it doesn't count Sundays. Why? Because every Sunday is a feast day. Kids LOVE this loop-hole, because it means that they can break whatever fast they've taken on for one day a week. But why don't Sundays count?
Here's the Roman Catholic reason: http://catholicism.about.com/od/holydaysandholidays/f/Counting_Lent.htm My thoughts? Because even in the darkest of times, there's still something bright to be found. Lent is supposed to be a dark time, a time for contemplation and prayer. A time to become "right with God." Ok, maybe not dark, but more somber, penitent, solemn, and all other words that don't really mean depressing but you know you're supposed to sit with your hands gently folded in your lap. But even during this time of somber penitence, we still have Christ. Christ is still with us, never leaving. We need to remember this. We MUST remember this. Every Sunday is a feast day! So as you plan your fast or your project, remember that there is still fun to be had - there are still bright things to notice, and feasts to be enjoyed. ~Gennie |
